• Diamond + Schmitt to design $454 million opera and ballet house in Russia

russia_opera_and_ballet_house.jpg Russia is all set to get another beautiful architectural landmark as Toronto based architectural firm Diamond + Schmitt has won an international competition to design a $454 million opera and ballet house at the renowned Mariinsky Theatre complex in St. Petersburg. The new theatre will be located across the street from the original theatre building which was built in 1860. Diamond + Schmitt’s design in collaboration with St. Petersburg architects, KB ViPS, beat four others and was the top pick of Mariinsky Theatre conductor and general manager, Valerie Gergiev. The general manager seemed extremely impressed with the winners who have to their credit the Four Seasons Center, Canada’s first theater built specifically for opera and ballet. In fact it was the ability of the architectural firm to create the beautiful Canadian theater in a budget that impressed Gergiev.

The construction of this new theatre is scheduled to begin right away.
