Wynn Las Vegas unveils the $33.6 million Tulips sculpture by Jeff Koons

Jeff Koons, born in 1955, has become one of the most prominent artists in the world. In fact, many people consider him to be one of the most important living artists today; Steve Wynn happens to be one of those people. He acquired Koons’s sculpture Tulips at auction in November 2012 for $33,682,500. The sculpture will be on display at the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas. It has been placed in front of the Wynn Theatre Rotunda located near the showroom. The sculpture is the final piece in Koons 5 piece ‘Celebration’ series; it is the largest and perhaps the most complex in the entire collection. The sculpture mimicked a bouquet of twisted balloon flowers all cast in stainless steel and polished till they affected a mirror. The stainless steel structure was then plated in a collection of vivid hues that give the viewer a sense of joyous, childlike exuberance. The mirrored surfaces reflect the light and give the piece paradoxical weightlessness, as the piece actually weighs around 3 tons.

When asked what the piece represented, Koons said, “Tulips is a symbol of hope and the strength of life’s energy.” Tulips add to Steve Wynn’s already prolific art collection. The piece graces the space between Wynn’s two hotels, namely Wynn and Encore; when asked about the sculpture, he said, “If you see it, you will find the experience totally delicious.”
