China woos foreign investors with a $38.7 million Seed Cathedral

The Chinese never seem to give up on pulling out surprises! A new Seed Cathedral is being built as the centerpiece to the United Kingdom Pavilion, Shanghai World Expo site at Shanghai. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the 20-meter tall Seed Cathedral is covered with 60,000 slim transparent acrylic rods that will move with the breeze. Each of the 7.5-meter long acrylic spikes contains a single seed, allowing light into the building during the day and illuminating after dark. The World Expo, which features the building, will start later in 2010 and be on for six months.
